shaving and waxing legs, underarms and bikini area

Shaving is not the best option for coarse and thick hair, such as is typically found by the bikini line. Coarse and thick hair is more suited for waxing. Another reason why waxing is better for thick hair, is that because the hair is pulled out from the roots, the hair grows back thinner over time. For exceptionally coarse and curly hair Cindy Barshop, owner of the renownedNew Yorkmedi-spa chain, Completely Bare, says a depilatory cream or lotion might be your best option as you’ll reduce the likelihood of developing ingrown hairs. Depilatories dissolve the hair under the skin, so regrowth is finer than if you shaved.

Cindy has some great advice to prevent ingrown hairs and razor burn. Wait 24 hours after shaving or waxing to exfoliate, then apply a product with salicylic acid or glycolic acid to stop the hair from being trapped under the skin. Salicylic and glycolic acid cleans sebum. You can use a pimple spot treatment that contains glycolic or salicylic acid. Most of Clinique’s toners include salicylic acid. Laser hair removal will ensure that you never have to worry about ingrown hairs again. 80 to 90 per cent of bumps will be gone by the third session.

Shaving

Exfoliate the skin before shaving.

For the closest shave, use a thick, moisture-rich shaving gel, and pull the skin taut whilst shaving. Shave in the direction of hair growth to reduce itchy, red bumps.

If you don’t have shaving gel, use hair conditioner, rather than regular soap which causes dryness.

Allow the pores to open by taking a hot bath or shower and waiting at least 5 minutes before shaving. Don’t start shaving more than 15 minutes after you start your bath or shower, as the skin will start to wrinkle and swell, making it harder to get a close shave.

A razor blade usually starts to show signs of dullness after about 10 shaves. Cindy recommends you use a new razor blade to shave or apply oil to the blade every time you shave with it. Rinse your blade with hot water to keep it clean whilst shaving, and wipe with alcohol afterwards to prevent residue from building up.

Because underarm hair grows nearly 50 per cent quicker than leg hair, shaving is the most suitable option. Underarm hair grows in various directions. Use a razor with multiple blades and shave upwards, downwards and sideways to get the smoothest shave.

Cindy Barshop’s tips for waxing

* Don’t wax just before your period, when your skin is at its most sensisitve.

* Use a little powder on the area to absorb any moisture.

* Choose a low temperature wax. Don’t use honey wax.

Ingrown hairs

Make sure to wait for your pores to close, you can splash cold water to close pores, before applying product after shaving or waxing. Moisturisers applied straight afterwards can clog the pores. Use a product with lavender to calm the skin.

Electrolysis – Electrifying Hair Removal

Electrolysis is a hair removal process that works by inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle, (the skin depression from which the hair emerges), and disabling the hair root either by heat or chemical action and sometimes both at the same time. Each hair is treated individually.

Electrolysis is most suitable for removing female facial hair, but it can be used on almost any part of the body. There are millions of people who have solved the embarrassing problem of excess hair with the help of the hair removal method of electrolysis.

Electrolysis hair removal was developed around 1869 by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor specializing in the treatment of diseases of the eye, Charles Michel, who sought a way to safely and effectively remove ingrown eyelashes which frequently caused blindness.

Electrolysis hair removal was adopted by the medical community and then adapted as a treatment for excess hair removal on other parts of the body. The same basic technique, improved and modernized, has been used since those times.

Hundreds of scientific articles published in medical literature state that hair removal by electrolysis is permanent. But – There’s also scientific evidence that regrowth can occur when a new root cell is formed in the same area.

Hair removal by electrolysis should be performed at a reputable clinic by a trained and state licensed electrologist.

Compared to other hair removal methods, electrolysis is time consuming. Depending on how fast your hair grows, it usually takes regular weekly or monthly visits for up to a year to complete the process.

Hair removal by electrolysis is painful, even with a topical anesthetic. Some describe it as a slight heat, tingling or stinging sensation.

Don’t hesitate to let your electrologist know if what you’re experiencing is uncomfortable. They’re trained to work within your comfort level. There are machine settings or the type of treatment that can be adjusted.

There usually is some redness or swelling and occasionally some pinpoint scabbing and even scarring following electrolysis hair removal. Ask your electrologist what you can do to help the healing process.

And hair removal by electrolysis is expensive. Usually there’s a rate of $25 to $100 per hour. And if the procedure takes longer, a lower hourly rate doesn’t always mean a lower cost.

If you’d rather not endure the pain, time, cost, and possible scarring of electrolysis, do some research to learn about alternative hair removal methods.

How to Permanently Remove Legs Hair

4 Aug

Overview

Unwanted leg hair can make you feel self-conscious about your legs, especially if there are many. There are several ways to remove leg hair, such as sugaring, waxing and shaving. However, these methods are not permanent and take a long time to do. Fortunately, there are other methods to treat and permanently remove unwanted hair from your legs.

Step 1

Use the a prescription cream that contains eflornithine HCl to permanently eliminate unwanted hair on your legs. These creams work by inhibiting an enzyme that affects hair growth called ornithine decarboxylase (ODC). Consult your physician or dermatologist for more information.

Step 2

Undergo electrolysis to eliminate unwanted leg hair. This cosmetic technique involves inserting a thin wire into the hair follicles on your leg. An electric current is then passed into your skin to destroy the roots, and any loosened hair is then removed using tweezers. Consult a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon about this procedure. You can also go to a health spa or beauty salon to get electrolysis done, however they will be unprepared to treat you if any skin irritations develop.

Step 3

Undergo photoepilation. Photoepilation works by applying controlled flashes of light to your skin to destroy the hair follicles. It will take three to five sessions within a span of two to three months to ensure the results are permanent. This popular nonsurgical technique is performed by a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Facts About Brazilian Bikini Hair Removal

3 Aug

Brazilian bikini hair removal can be accomplished with several methods. Shaving, waxing, depilatory creams and laser all have advantages and disadvantages when it comes to removing hair from the bikini area.

Shaving is probably the easiest, least painful and least expensive way to remove hair. It is also the quickest, as it can usually be completed in just a few minutes. You can use a regular manual disposable razor, but for Brazilian bikini hair removal, you may wish to invest in a bikini area shaver designed specifically for that purpose. The biggest disadvantage of shaving is that it has to be done frequently, sometimes daily, to keep the bikini area hair free. Also, shaving can lead to ingrown hairs, which could be very painful in the delicate pubic area.

Some people prefer depilatory creams to shaving, as the results are generally longer lasting. Since the depilatory product dissolves hair down to the root, it can give a smoother result than shaving. Many women find that depilatories work well to remove unwanted hair from the face and some parts of the body, such as arms and legs, but most people find hair removal creams to be too irritating for use on the sensitive skin in the genital area. If you just want a clean bikini line, then a depilatory may work. If full Brazilian bikini hair removal is your goal, creams may not be the best method for you.

Waxing is a popular method for Brazilian bikini hair removal, as it provides immediate, thorough and long lasting results. Most people will choose to get a bikini wax at a salon, though there are waxing kits that are suitable for Brazilian bikini hair removal at home. Most people will find waxing to be uncomfortable, possibly painful, especially the first couple of times.

Tips For Permanent Pubic Hair Removal

2 Aug

Hair on any part of the body is meant for several biological reasons such as the proper protection of the skin and so on. However, it is common to remove hair from arms, legs, face and even pubic areas.

Pubic hair removal has been done for a long time. It is especially required by models and actresses because of the clothing that may need to wear.

Pubic hair removal also falls under proper personal hygiene and etiquette. This is why many men and women nowadays shave their pubic hairs from time to time. Nevertheless pubic hair removalcan be annoying because of the sensitivity of the region as well as for being a time consuming process.

There are various methods in which one can get rid of their pubic hair. These methods include shaving, waxing, and epilatory methods such as tweezing and plucking. However, the pubic region is one of the most delicate parts of the body, and shaving may cause irritations.

Hence the most popular and safe way to do pubic hair removal is to opt for permanent pubic hair removal. There are also different ways in which you can remove your pubichair such as by trimming, or by a Brazilian wax or a complete wax.

Permanent pubic hair removal is done by such processes as electrolysis, flash lamp treatments, and laser treatment. These methods are safer for pubic hair removal and also these processes are not required frequently and hence one can be hair free for quite some time. In addition, permanent pubic hair removal is a matter of one’s choice and so is the selection of the process of hair removal that one wants to go for. This article will elaborate on the ways in which you can opt for permanent pubic hair removal.

Permanent pubic hair removal methods

Electrolysis

One of the most popular permanent methods to remove pubic hair is electrolysis. This is not only a popular method but also a successful and time tested method of pubic hair removal. In this process, electricity is passed through a metal probe that is placed into the hair follicles. The process does not involve any puncture or incision into the skin. The electricity that is transmitted through the metal probes damages the hair follicles.

In certain cases, the electricity is mixed with chemical, heat, salt and water to have different effects. In the method that uses chemicals, the electric current makes the salt and the water inside the body to react. The reaction produces sodium hydroxide also called lye, which destroys the cells that grow hair. Similarly, when heat energy is passed with the electric current, the hair follicles are destroyed.

The most important factor concerning the process of electrolysis is the fact that this process requires the presence of another individual who will work the electric current and hence a lot depends on the efficiency of the person concerned. This is the reason why electrolysis should preferably always be done by a professional.

Light energy based treatments

Another method of permanent pubic hair removal is light based treatments. In this method, light energy is used to destroy the hair follicles. It is similar to the process of electrolysis with the only difference being that in the latter, electric current is used, and in the former, light energy is used. This treatment uses two sources of light energy – laser and flash lamps.

However, unlike in the method of electrolysis, in these light energy based treatments, the effect is much less. Thus while electrolysis can destroy the growth of pubic hair almost permanently, in light energy based treatments, there is primarily reduction in hair formation and not effective hair removal as such. Whereas the lasers use a lot of light energy, in the flash lamps, only light of a specific wavelength is used.

This process for hair removal is much more effective in hair removal from larger areas. Also this method has been found to be more effective for black hair rather than blond, brown or red hair. Like the process of electrolysis, light energy based pubic hair removal treatments require the help of a professional.

Oral Medicines

Besides the above mentioned electronic methods for pubic hair removal, there are other methods as well. These methods include oral medications. These medicines are very effective in hair removal as well as in prevent the re-growth of hair. Nevertheless certain kinds of oral medicines may have side effects. Therefore it is better to consult a doctor before using oral pubic hair removal medicines, especially in the case of women.

Waxing

In the method of waxing, a waxing gel or cream is required. The gel or cream is applied onto the skin with the hair and a piece of muslin or waxing removal strips are applied on top of the creams. The cloth or waxing strip is pressed down on the skin for a few seconds and then pulled off against the direction of the hair growth.

Waxing is effective but not for a very convenient process of pubic hair removal given the nature of the area. Also, since skin around the pubic region is sensitive and delicate, the waxing process may inflame or otherwise irritate the skin. Also, before applying wax on the pubic region you can test the wax on some part of the skin to see whether there is any allergic reaction to the wax.

Other methods of pubic hair removal

There are two other methods of pubic hair removal known as transcutaneous and transdermal electrolysis. These processes are performed by passing electricity or adhesive patches. These processes damage the hair follicles reducing further growth of pubic hair.

There are some advantages of pubic hair removal such as the area remains clean which prevents fungal infection. Also, the hair free area allows for increased circulation of air to the pubic region. One disadvantage of permanent pubic hair removal is that it is expensive and since the hair growth cannot completely be stopped it becomes a recurring expense.

For instance waxing is considered a good way to get rid of that hair that is bothering you. The good thing about waxing is that you can actually do it once in a while and once you do then your skin will be smooth for a while. You only have to do it every once in a while making it a very easy thing for you to without having to it all the time. The negative with this method is that it can be painful and many people don’t like to use this method because it can irritate their skin.

One of the most common ways that people will use to get rid of unwanted hair is to shave. The reason that many people still prefer to shave is because it isn’t painful and it’s easy to do. The best idea is to do research and use the information that you find to make an informed decision and see how well that works for you, if you find that isn’t’ the best option then try another one.

Laser Hair Removal for Dark-Skinned People

28 Jul

Although laser hair removal is fairly popular because its precision in removing hair, the procedure could become difficult if a person’s skin is dark.

Before anyone gets the idea that this is racial discrimination, consider how the laser could dramatically affect the pigment of the skin. If the person’s skin has a dark pigment, the skin is more likely to burn from the laser. This happens primarily because light that makes contact with dark colors generally gets converted into heat energy.

Normally when a laser hits light skin, much of the laser energy can easily target the darker-colored hair on the skin. This allows it to easily remove the hair out of its shaft. With dark skin, the laser could just as easily burn the skin because of the immense surface area that can burn from the laser.

Throughout this entire process, it cannot easily target the hair anymore, unless the practitioner uses the proper adjustments on the laser. The laser obviously cannot adjust itself automatically to keep itself from injuring the person’s skin. Thus, the practitioner should identify the proper laser and the amount of energy to be emitted before doing anything else.

For darker skins, thorough knowledge of the laser removal process is especially important. The laser is specifically designed to only hit the melanin pigment in the hair shaft, not the rest of the skin. In order to specifically hit this area, practitioners use contact cooling to protect the skin.

Contact cooling involves the use of something to cool the surface of the skin. Laser operators can use a variety of methods to cool the skin, such as using two sapphire plates with water running between them.

Practitioners should be experienced at laser surgery, so make sure that the person is a board-certified physician before agreeing to a laser hair removal appointment. It is best if the surgeon is skilled at using a variety of laser machines, so that the person can find the proper laser to match the patient’s skin.

They must also use the longest wavelength of light when they are treating patients with dark skin. Usually an Nd:YAG laser is the best choice for dark skin, with a wavelength of approximately 1064 nm. They use this because the ability of melanin to absorb light decreases as the wavelength gets longer. This makes the operation less risky than if someone used a laser with a shorter wavelength.

However, keep in mind that the Nd:YAG laser is the not the best laser on the market. People have often commented that this laser is more painful than the other lasers. It is also more likely to cause burns, scarring, skin discoloration and swelling. It is also the least effective of all the lasers that are currently available.

With all that said, there are still plenty of other options available for people with dark skin. Shaving is still the most inexpensive alternative. People could also try out Waxing at a local salon or spa. They could even try out the hair removal sprays for a semi-permanent hair removal solution.
